Henry Clay Honduran
Origin: Honduras
Wrapper: Nicaragua
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Honduras/Nicaragua/Peru
Introduced in 2005, the Henry Clay Honduran is a new stick from an old school brand. Henry Clay is one of the brands mentioned in Rudyard Kipling’s cigar poem The Betrothed as Kipling writes There’s peace in a Larranaga, there’s calm in a Henry Clay.
The Henry Clay Honduran isn’t one of the most attractive cigars out there. The band and the stick are pretty unexciting to look at. The wrapper is …
Partagas #8 Maduro
Origin: Dominican Republic
Wrapper: Cameroon
Binder: Mexico
Filler: Dominican/Mexican
I reached into my humidor and pulled out a staple cigar. The Partagas #8 Maduro has been a part of my collection for as long as I can remember. It’s not flashy in its appearance and tends to blend in to its surroundings and go unnoticed but whenever I need a cigar that I’m familiar with, this is the one I reach for. The Partagas #8 is one of the foundations …
Don Juan Urquijo
Wrapper: Connecticut
Binder: Philippines
Filler: Brazil, Dominican Republic & Philippines
I wasn’t sure what to expect from the Don Juan Urquijo before I lighted up. There I was in Makati City in the Philippines at one of the many Shoe Marts (SM) (a major department store similar to our Macys/Hechts but with a wine/liquor/tobacco section) and my opportunity to try a Filipino cigar. Now some of the people I met in the Philippines had warned me that most of the …
Partagas Limited Reserve
Wrapper: Cameroon
Binder: Mexican
Filler: Dominican & Mexican
Before I left for my two week trip to the Philippines I was left with the dilemma that faces all BOTL. What cigars to pack for my trip?
I went thru the humidor and picked out some of my usual smokes (Torano Signature, Maria Mancini, Partagas Black Label, Punch Champion & Rare Corojo). When I finally made my way to the last drawer of my humidor I spotted a bunch of cigars …
Cigar Purchases: Cigars from the Philippines
It took a combined 70 hours of traveling door-to-door and back to get them but my trip to the Philippines was a fruitful one. It was wonderful to go home and enjoy a slower, more relaxed pace of life in a place where the US dollar is strong and cost of living cheap. Here is the bounty I have brought home from the Philippines. All together I spent around $300 US on 300 cigars. Thank God I had no problems …
Off to the Philippines
Well I’m off for the next two weeks. Going home to the Philippines. I really hope to check out the cigar scene and pick up some locally grown cigars to bring back and smoke. The history of the Philippines is so rich in Spanish lore. Ferdinand Magellan brought tobacco seeds from Cuba when he “discovered” the Philippines. The local people also killed Magellan but lets hope its not because he brought bad seeds to them.
While I’m gone, my good …
Cigar News: DC Cigar Tax
So on April 1st the DC Government imposed a new tax of 12% on cigars. Here is the catch, exempted from the tax are pipe tobacco and “premium” cigars, defined in the law as a cigar that costs more than $2. The new tax was created to increase the cost of inexpensive tobacco products to discourage young people from using them. To me, this is bogus. It’s just another way for the “man” to keep the poor people down. It’s …
Hoyo Dark Sumatra (Media Noche)
I find it great to review cigars that someone I know has smoked. Over on another site my buddy Walt reviewed the Hoyo Dark Sumatra and now it’s my turn.
Origin: Honduras

Ring: 54
Strength: Full
Wrapper Color: Dark Brown
Wrapper Type: Ecuador Sumatran

I focused in on this little beauty as it was one of only three left in the box. I’ve had my share of Dark Sumatra but I …

Sancho Panza Double Maduro / Extra Fuerte
First let me say that this was so much fun to do! Unamed13 I’m very glad you got a hold of me on IM and asked me to do this. I may have to make something like this a regular feature on the blog.
To recap, I was asked to review and compare two cigars from Sancho Panza, the Double Maduro and the Extra Fuerte.
Luckily enough, I had both of these fine sticks resting in the humidor. The Double …
