La Aurora Preferidos Platinum Cameroon Robusto

The La Aurora Preferidos is an iconic cigar that I’m sure you’ve smoked or at least seen at your local cigar shop.  The originals came in tubos in the double perfecto shape in red, blue, green, silver and gold.  Later on, they added several more colors in which all the colors represent precious metals or gems.  These are the flagship cigars of the La Aurora brand and have become synonymous with the brand.   The line was further extend when La Aurora added a robusto, toro and corona without a tubo to help lower the cost the the Preferidos.  All the cigar feature Dominican binder and filler tobaccos.

Appearance:

The wrapper is very well applied to the cigar.  It’s hard to find where the seams are on both the wrapper and the cap.  The wrapper is a gorgeous chocolate brown with a barnyard smell in the foot. I get notes of cedar and nuts on the cold draw.

First Half

The cigar is smoking great with notes of leather, almonds, white pepper with a slight milk chocolate note. The milk chocolate note comes in a little more about the midway point and the white pepper is stronger on the retrohale. The draw and bun are both perfect with a medium body.

Last Half

The cigar is a little more bitter near the end. I get notes of cedar, white pepper, cocoa and leather.  It lost a little of the sweetness near the end.  The cigar is still burning great with a nice draw and medium body.

Conclusion

La Aurora is a king of Cameroon tobacco.  They really know how to use this delicate and hard to acquire tobacco.  That is shown in the Preferidos line and especially the Cien Anos lines.  The notes of the wood, cocoa, spice and leather were very nice and the construction is impeccable.  I do still prefer the No. 2 over the robusto, but for the cost, you can’t beat it.  This is another great cigar by La Aurora and one you should give a test drive at your local cigar shop.  With a medium body, sub-$10 price point and great flavor, it should appeal to the vast majority of cigar smokers.

  1. The perfectos are not in my budget or flavor profile. I will give these a try though. Thanks for the review.

  2. I was excited to see you reviewed this cigar! I always keep a box in my humidor, it’s the stick I grab when I don’t know what I’m in the mood for…and it hits the spot every time!
