IPCPR 2016: Cavalier Genève

It’s safe to say that IPCPR is all about new things. For us, it usually means new blends, lines and vitolas for brands we’ve known for years. But sometimes it’s about meeting entirely new people and learning about new (to us, anyway) cigar brands. Such is the case with this interview.

As I was walking down the aisle from one appointment to another, Sabastien Decoppet handed me a cigar with a shining gold diamond on the wrapper. I have to tell you, if someone offers me gold, I’m going to stop for a moment to talk to them. (I’m also likely to stop for emeralds, rubies, sapphires and hard currency, but those are generally harder to smoke.) It turns out the shiny part of the band really was 24 carat gold leaf, not just the reflection of trade show lights on cellophane.

Mr. Decoppet’s company is Cavalier Genève Premium Cigars, and as you may have guess from the name, it is based on Geneva, Switzerland. In this interview, he tells us about the White Series which is made by Plasencia and currently sold in Europe. Given gold the gold leaf, you might be surprised to learn that MSRP ranges from $9 to $10, depending on the size. He also showed us his event-only Black Series, which is more geared toward the American market and features a San Andres Negra wrapper. The plan is for the Black Series to become regular production next year.
