Davidoff Nicaragua Toro – Contest time! – Winner Announced

IMG_0275

Recently  I was invited by Davidoff to attend their launch party of their new cigar line, Davidoff Nicaragua, in New York City.  I went with my local shop owner, Paul Bertucci of The Cigar Shop in Biloxi, MS, as they are an appointed Davidoff White Label merchant.  We flew in Thursday morning for the event later that night in downtown Manhattan.  Davidoff had a DJ playing music as images of exploration adventure were projected on the walls.  Jim Young, president of Davidoff US, gave us an overview and introduced Davidoff master blender, Henke Kelner.  Henke told us of the 10 year journey Davidoff took to create their new Nicaraguan cigar and what it meant to Davidoff.  We were then greeted with models carrying trays of samples of the new cigar for us to try in all three sizes.  The cigar will be released after the IPCPR trade show in July.  The cigar currently comes in three sizes:

  • Short Corona – 3 3/4 x 46  (14 ct box)
  • Robusto – 5 x 50  (12 ct box, tubos)
  • Toro – 5 1/2 x 54  (12 ct box)

I chose the toro to review as it was the only vitola I haven’t smoked yet and two of our other blogger friends already did the other two vitolas.  This was a sample from the event in NYC and my only one, so keep that in mind.  The cigar burned very well as the construction was the typical Davidoff excellence.  From the beginning I got a hint of sweet vanilla oakiness along with rich earth and black pepper on the finish.  As the cigar developed, dark chocolate and espresso notes developed, which reminded me of those dark chocolate covered espresso beans you get at your local coffee hut, as well as the hint of sweet vanilla turning into a more creamy note that was more subdued than the sweet vanilla.  The oak was still there as well.  As the cigar burned down to the end, the strength picked up.  It went from upper mild to upper medium to lower full at the end.  Overall, I really enjoyed the cigar and those of you that thought most Davidoff cigars were too mild for your taste should really check these out. Especially for $16.90 a piece for the toro, which by Davidoff standards is a steal, you really can’t go wrong.
