Recap: DC Tweetup 2013

As many of you know, the 2nd Annual DC Cigar Tweetup was this past weekend. Like I mentioned in an early post previewing the Serie D Maduro Lancero, this year the B&B Cigar Club chose Autism Speaks as the charity this year. Between selling two types of packages and a silent auction hosted at Civil Cigar Lounge, the 2nd Annual DC Cigar Tweetup raised $4,000 for Autism Speaks.

The event started off Friday afternoon at W.Curtis Draper (Bethesda) sponsored by Oliva Cigars. I’ll be honest, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen WCD-Bethesda as busy as it was on early Friday afternoon. I’m sure it was a nice surprise in sales for WCD-Bethesda although, I’m equally sure some of the usuals were a bit taken back feeling that their normal relaxed spot turned a bit chaotic complete with Skip Martin’s (@ChiefHava) rape whistle. Once the sun started to set, festivities moved to Civil Cigar Lounge for the silent auction, hangout and of course, to Drink.Smoke.Eat. I originally planned just to attend and hangout but as usual, me and my camera got put to work.

I missed out Saturday’s day trip to Tobaccology in Manassas, VA. I really need to make a trip out there as I’ve heard nothing but great things about this up and coming shop. I got to meet the guys behind Tobaccology at Civil the night before and they were really warm and welcoming. By the time I caught up with the Tweetup Bus it was Saturday night and the final stop at Chesapeake Cigar in Edgewater, MD (suburb of Annapolis MD). @ReverendMike owns and runs Chesapeake Cigar and it was my long overdue trip to visit his shop. @ReverendMike was a big supporter of The Little Robusto Project so it was nice to finally get out there and visit him.

I’ve had a hand in planning a few Tweetups in my day dating back to 2009 and 2010 for the TBOTLCH (Twitter Brother of The Leaf Cocktail Hour) in New Orleans and even though I got put to work, this was by far the most enjoyable one I’ve attended. Sure others maybe bigger or more outlandish but this one was special. It was great to catchup with Barry from Miami Cigar & Company and talk about “the golden age of blogging”. Having Jose Blanco take a bite (literally a bite) out of my cigar to figure out what the wrapper was. Talking tobacco with Skip. My hat is off to my friends at B&B Cigar Club for putting on a great Tweetup and for doing their part to give back by raising $4,000 for Autism Speaks. Truly amazing!

  1. Great coverage Jerry, not to mention the quality of the pics. That Oliva shot is sweet! Looks like it was a fun and beneficial night for the cause. One thing though, did not see the food at the event and you know how we roll on that…Hope to make it next year.

    Best Regards,
