Prometheus Cutter Y - Lighters Direct

About two months ago, I received an email from one of our sponsors, Steven from Lighters Direct. Steven and I got to talking about an article on cutting cigars. In the exchange, he told me about a new cutter coming out from Prometheus, the Cutter Y.

Unfortunately, Steven didn’t have the Cutter Y in stock. So in lieu of sending one to me, he got in touch with Keith Park at Prometheus, seeing to it that a sample cutter would make its way into my hands. In no time at all, I had a brand new Cutter Y to toy around with.

The first photos I saw gave me the impression that it was a combination guillotine cutter and cigar scissors. When it arrived and I got my hands on it, I was a little disappointed to see that it was less the hybrid I hoped for and more like a double-bladed guillotine.

I shook off the small disappointment and worked the Cutter Y into my normal cigar smoking routine. Due to its size and weight, I opted to use it at home rather than carry it around with me. The all metal makeup of the Cutter Y made it a bit too bulky to carry around in the front pocket of my jeans.

After having cut a few dozen cigars with it, I’m comfortable enough with its operation to point out the good and the bad of the new Prometheus Cutter Y.

Positive:

  • Smooth action in slide when extending and retracting blades
  • Sharp blades on delivery, cuts without tearing or cracking of the cigar’s cap
  • Heavy in the hand, feels like a well built tool
  • Eye-catching design

Negative:

  • Too heavy to carry around in the pocket of your jeans but works fine for a jacket
  • High polished finish shows tobacco dust and oil easily after a few uses

Opinion:

The Cutter Y from Prometheus is a cool looking cigar utility. I know that appearance means little when it comes to functionality, so it’s a good thing the cutter also performs well. Holding the cutter properly takes some getting used to. Unlike a traditional double bladed guillotine, it tends to be a little bottom heavy when you’re gripping the blades of the cutter.

Due to its size and weight, the Cutter Y is destined to be a left waiting on your desk, or table top, until it is called upon. The weight makes it impractical for carrying in your pants pocket and the polished finish will likely show wear quickly if it shared space with your house keys and pocket change.

While I didn’t pay for my Prometheus Cutter Y, I wouldn’t mind spending the $70.00 if I were in the market for a table top cutter, or something more showy than my Palio and Xikar cutters. This cutter is available in three different finishes and as of this writing is in stock over at Lighters Direct.

  1. Nice review.

I happened to get one of these and agree that it is a bit heavy to carry around. It is great, however, for use at home. I really like the heft of the cutter, it feels like you’ve got something solid and well made in your hand. For me. it is now a toss up between my Xikar scissors and the Y cutter for prepapring my cigars when I am at home.

  2. I recently won this cutter in the 12 days of Xmas contest and the above review is 100% accurate. This a great quality cutter, but a little to heavy to carry around. If you ever got mugged on the street you could easy knock out your attacker with a single blow from this thing.
