Perdomo Inmenso

Hey happy Halloween everyone! In honor of the holiday, I’ve selected a real monster of a cigar to review. One that will send cold shivers down the spine of lonsdale lovers everywhere, and pain people with passions for panatelas. I’m talking about the Inmenso by Perdomo. As luck would have it, I happened to pick up a fiver of the Inmenso by Perdomo during dark, scary days of my cigar auction addiction. (Cigar auctions, man! Beware!) So let’s light up this tobacco terror and check it out.

Cigar Stats:
Size: 5 x 70 “robusto”
Wrapper: Ecuador
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Honduras, Nicaragua
Smoking Time: 1 1/2 hours +
Beverage: Water
Price: ~$5

The Pre-Smoke
It goes without saying the first thing you notice is the massive ring gauge of this cigar. It looks less like cigar and more like a sausage that was left on the grill a little too long. And if it didn’t look silly enough with it’s tree-trunk girth, the bright yellow band has a comical picture of an old lady smoking one. The stick is nearly as big as her head. (If I had more time and more photoshop talent, I’d put a witch’s hat on her head for this post. Oh well, it’s the thought that counts.)

Scary amounts of tobacco!

Getting beyond the comical superficial aspects, the wrapper of the cigar itself is a beautiful, oily rosado. It’s a little lumpy to the touch, but firmly packed with tobacco. Perdomo may have been kidding around with the band, but they were very serious about the actual cigar.

The cigar pictured for this review happened to have a flaw or two at the foot. Otherwise these cigars looked pretty good. The wrapper smelled of a combination of strong barnyard with molasses, and I got an oily sweetness in the cold taste.

I think I see a ghost of tobacco past…

The Burn
As luck would have it, the cigar I photographed for this review had plenty of burn issues. In fact, the burn was such a pain that I considered not smoking the last one. It wouldn’t stay lit, it tunneled, and it never burned evenly. Just terrible. I just didn’t want to spend two hours fighting with a cigar.

That black spot on the side? A tunnel of pure evil…

Fortunately, I did light up that next one and it burned nicely, though not very evenly. And as I recall from a previous smoke, the burn is usually pretty good, though the burn line itself can be a bit erratic.

There is one other thing. The ash. Given the unusual size of this cigar, you might expect that it would hold an unusually long ash. But you’d be wrong. The ash never made it past an inch and a half. And that might have been due to the ash’s flakiness.

The Flavor
The Inmenso opened up with a creamy coffee flavor with a little bit of caramel to it and some subdued spiciness. As the cigar progressed through the first third the caramel got noticeably sweeter. In the second third, the creamy coffee flavor continued, but it was joined by a pleasant, herbal leather flavor. At one point, I noted the cigar became very buttery. And as it moved into the final third, the leather flavor took over and was joined by some more spiciness.

The Price
According to a cigar catalog I have laying around, you can get these for as low as $4.50 if you buy 20 of them. Even at 10 pack price of $5 I think these are pretty reasonably priced.

The Verdict
When I lit one up a while back, I didn’t expect to much. I basically bought it for its massive size and comical band. It was a whim buy. I was thinking less about the quality of the cigar than the quality of the comments I’d get smoking it at a herf. I was pleasantly surprised that it was a pretty enjoyable smoke. I’ve found it’s a good smoke for an afternoon spent toiling over a hot computer.

I’d have to say I like the Perdomo Inmenso, but with a couple of reservations. The first is that it’s a little uncomfortable to smoke. It’s just too damn big. (No kidding, right?) It has literally made my ears pop when I’ve smoked it in the past.

The second reservation is this cigar takes a long time to smoke. And I’m a slow smoker. It’s good as a yard ‘gar but can become a little boring when its the main focus of your attention. (When you’re reviewing it, for example.)

But if you’re looking at a decent cigar with a massive ring gauge, you can’t go wrong here.

Liked It: Yeah
Buy It Again: Possibly
Recommend It: Yes to people into huge ring gauges.

  1. Nice review Brian, I have had a few of these and was surprised how good they are for the price. They also make some in a 60 ring gauge I think. And I know for sure they have a torpedo either 60 or 70 ring gauge, which is a lot easier on the mouth.

  2. Thanks Matt,
I may have to look for that torpedo!

The Inmenso is a pretty good cigar, I’ve found I enjoy it the most when I smoke it while working. While I was smoking the first one, I remember thinking, “hey, this is actually a pretty good smoke!” And that the size actually worked really well for a day spent working from home. I think I have one left, and I’m debating lighting it up now…

  3. I got a 10 pack of the maduro 60 ring gauge. To correct the burn problem these need a low humidity around 63% or they can be a pain. Great review. Happy Halloween.

  4. These things are nuts, 70 f’n ring LOL, I thought 54 was too big!

    nice review though!

  5. Loved the review! I added you to my blogroll.

  6. the only 70 ring i had made my jaw sore for the next two days haha but i love 60’s…great review

  7. Ha ha, does anyone want lock jaw?
great review, Brain. I actually want to try it now.
I was planing on buying a 5 pack to bomb some
people who I know can’t stand big rings hahah.
But I think if I ever run across one, i’ll give it a try.
    thanks!

  10. Hello.
First time commenter here. Came over to see about a Camacho Legendario I was set to smoke. Nice site.
As for the Inmenso, I have bid on and lost for this cigar at least a couple of times, maybe to you(?) I didnt lose any sleep over it of course. It seemed more a novelty type purchase at the time.
I have never seen this cigar in a tabacconists, but I have always been curious how this monster actually smokes. I was a little surprised to hear that it is actually not horrible. Some day I may get one.
Speaking of fat ring gauges, I have heard about a custom cigar shop in NYC (Martinez) that makes a 120 rg. Outrageous. I tend to lean toward fat rg’s myself, but 54 is about the upper reach as far as Im concerned. It simply is not comfortable to sit with your mouth cracked half open to smoke a cigar. (and besides, it looks ridiculous in public so these things are best smoked alone or in small company)
Anyway, nice site. All the best.
