La Aurora 1495 Robusto

Today I smoked the La Aurora 1495 Robusto. This cigar has a Ecuadoran Sumatra Sun Grown wrapper, a Dominican Corojo Binder and a mix of Dominican piloto cubano, Nicaraguan, Peruvian and Dominican Ligero filler. This cigar was developed by Jose Blanco, La Aurora’s Sales Director and master blender. This cigar was the first one from them to use 4 different tobaccos, it was also the first hit from the start for them.

After cutting this with a punch cutter, I light up the cigar. Initial smoke quantity was very good. This little cigar produces a lot of smoke. I noticed some coffee and spices from the start and after smoking for a few minutes I started to get a hint of coffee. I did not have any kind of beverage other than water until about the half way mark. I took a sip of my Vecchia Romagna Brandy and noted that it brought out the flavors in the cigar even more. They tasted more vibrant.
Throughout the smoking experience, the cigar remained consistent in flavor and burn quality was excellent. The ash was a nice white color and was firm. Overall this was a very enjoyable cigar and I recommend it to everyone who enjoys a good medium strength cigar. The cigar should run you about $10 a stick and it is worth it.

Cigar Size: Robusto 5 X 50
Smoking Time: 70 minutes
Time in Humidor: 10 months
Cut Type: Punch
Light Type: Single Flame Torch
Beverage: Water/Vecchia Romagna Brandy
Tasting Notes: Coffee, cocoa and spices
Video Length: 17 minutes

  1. Hey Justin,

Just wanted to tell you that your reviews are getting better and better. The review on this cigar was dead on. I’ve had the opprotunity to smoke a few of these but the prices around here (NJ) are 13 bucks and up for the robusto. I would say that I’ve smoked about half a dozen of these and they were all consistent with one and another.

FYI, that song you were listening to, “Agua de Beber”, translates to “Water for Drinking.” If you like that version check out the original sung by Astrud Gilberto. Not as jazzy and much more mellow.

    Keep up the great work!!

  2. Hi Justin,

Your best review to date, imo. You did butcher the name of the brandy, it’s pronounced VECK-YA RO-MON-YA. I really like the way you pair your cigars with both water and a special drink, makes your reviews a little unique. I alway enjoy a glass of VC because it brings back great memories of my grandfather.

Did Jerry’s wife deliver? I’m waiting for the review with “Little Jerry”

  3. Hey justin great videos just thought i would let you know that the way i understand to pronouce piloto is
PEE-LOT-TOE. Agian great videos i hope this helps.

  4. Best review from you to date. It is great to see your personality coming out more, and more every video. Keep up the good work, can’t wait to see the next one from you.

  5. Justin –
This review is fantastic! Very well done with excellent info given, pacing was good and no dead air time.

I find the 1495 Robusto to be exactly what you described.

If I may make a request… I’d like to see a review of Camacho’s new Triple Maduro – it sounds interesting.

    Keep up the good work.

  6. Justin…good job on the review. They are getting better everytime. I have a suggestion. Why dont you play a nice music, jazz or latino in the backgroud, low volume and that will make your videos way more exciting.

    Alex

  7. Thanks everyone!

Jabba: Thanks for the help, glad you like that stuff too.

Jim: As soon as I find one, I will review it!

Alex: I want to have some light music in the background, but we have to figure out what we can play. We don’t want to get hit with any lawsuits, so we have to be careful what we play when. I found some free stuff, but have not listened to it that much to find one I like. I will look into it.

  8. That was hilarious when you knocked something over on your desk (anything important?). It’s ok to laugh at yourself, bro! Have fun with it.

    Keep up the good work.

  9. music in the background would be cool, I like that idea.

    Isn’t it PEE – LOW – TOE? I’m not 100% sure though.

  10. Good news on prices. I looked at the Comparison Shopper at Cigarcyclopedia.com and found Robusto 5-packs for around $36 (the Corona 5-packs are at $27).

Might make a nice 4th of July 5-pack gift!

Thanks again, Justin, for a great review. I agree with all of the above comments – you’ve come a long way (much faster than I would’ve). Looking forward to hearing from Jerry and the others with the upcoming “Your Questions, OUR Answers”.

  11. ER Doc: Do you need my mailing address to send those out 🙂

I really appreciate the kind words. I am getting more comfortable with the reviews and trying to have more fun with them. I have been watching alot of the archives from Jerry and Walt and getting a feel for some of the things that they have done. I liked the ones were Jerry would come on and have some music playing while he enjoyed his cigar.

I also look at them as to what information would I like to know. That is why I added the recap at the end of the review. I try and find good pictures to mix in as well so you know the product and/or manufacturer. I am still experimenting with the opening and closing music.

Thank you so much for watching them.

  12. As long as the music isn’t synced into the video production you’re okay. If it’s picked up as ambient audio, you’re safe.

  13. Nice job Justin. You’ve come a long way from that first review. Another thing that you’re doing a great job on accepting and implamenting constructive criticism. I know for me I’d just get pissed off and do it the way I wanted.

I live in the Chicago area and anytime you’re in town send me a line and we can enjoy a smoke on me

  14. Whoot!!! I have 4 of these babies coming to me soon!!! Can’t wait to smoke one of these.

Justin, great review and I enjoy the different drinks you have with your cigars. Brings out the desire in me to relax and enjoy a fine cigar with a good drink to pair it with to just enhance the summer evenings …..

  15. great review man. I just got a couple of these in a sampler quite unexpectedly and was not sure what to make of them. This was very helpfull and I am quite excited to smoke mine now. Thanks!!

  16. This is a great review, right on the money, I would like to thank all you guys that have enjoyed this cigar, I think its one of the best cigars we have ever made, and to be honest one of the most complex smokes out there.

    La Aurora.

  17. Great review. I just bid on a box from JR in the corona size. Justin’s reviews are very informative.
