Henry Clay

Today I reviewed a Henry Clay. This cigar comes to us from Altadis. I have smoked many Henry Clays and have always enjoyed them. This particular cigar is a Grandes size, which is a 50 X 6. The wrapper and binder are Nicaraguan and the filler is a mix of Nicaraguan, Honduran and Peru.

The prelight aroma reminded me of hay and wood. It was a very nice aroma. After a cut from my Xikar and a light with my single flame torch, I started to enjoy this cigar. The burn started out very consistent. The initial flavor was smooth and had the hay and wood aroma to it. The cigar produced a nice thick smoke, something that I really enjoy from a cigar.

Through out the smoke, the flavor remain consistent. The cigar did not burn hot and up until the end, had a very even burn. Near the end the cigar started to burn funny. The cigar started to canoe on me. This means that the top was burning more than the bottom. Since I was almost finished, I was not concerned.

The cigar is rated as a medium to full, but I found the flavor to stay in the medium range. The flavor is smooth and mellow and was not overpowering. I recommended this cigar to anyone who enjoys a good medium flavor cigar. At around $4 a stick retailer, this is an excellent priced cigar. If you purchase by the box, you can drop that price to about $3 a stick. I enjoyed my cigar with a glass of water and a 12 year old Jameson whiskey. The whiskey did numb my mouth a bit so I did not enjoy the full flavor of the cigar after a few puffs. As the whiskey flavor went away, the flavor returned. The impact was not negative, but one to be aware of.

  1. I have a Henry Clay chest humidor and an ice box humidor. I converted an old wooden ice box to a humidor. I should get some pics up.

  2. Oh please do, sounds like a nice set up.

This review was much better than the first as in the first you seemed so nervous. Still good none the less, keep them reviews coming, as a newer cigar smoker these video reviews help me tons.

    Thanks again =)

  3. NICE review. Good details about the smoke flavors. One thing I do enjoy, like in your first review, is explicit detail about the cigar itself (IE wrapper, filler details etc).

    Good work!

  4. Thanks for the review, very nicely done. I came across the stogiereview two weeks ago and really enjoy what you guys do. I smoke only one cigar a day so I like to always have a good one and you are a big help with that. I also enjoy an Irish Whiskey, one of my favorites is Connemara, a peated single malt, which has a nice smokey flavor. It’s a bit pricey at $40ish, but good.

  5. Justin,
I can only say NICE JOB! Looking back my comment about your first review made me look like an asshole….I’m sorry. Your a good addition to the team, and unlike other comments I don’t mind a little computer info. Thanks for the tip. I have a Dell and a mac laptop that has collected dust, maybe I’ll play with it. You still occasionally play with your absent ring :)…but now its eccentric, not obsessive. I wish you would smoke a cigar with a little life to it. The Upmann’s and Clay’s are all right, but no one is going to go out and grab one up. Let’s try a Felipe Power, or a Oliva Master Blend. Maybe one of the many Gurkha’s. A Torano Noventa. Something thats got some WOW. Nice Job, your doing great. The length of the video is perfect

  6. Nice review Justin. What a great example of what canoeing is. I’m glad you didn’t flame that bad boy as it helps people new to the cigar world to see what the terminology means when people talk about canoeing. Now you need to power smoke one to tunnel it heheheh.

  7. Joe254: Thanks for the recommendation. I will try that. Have you checked out Whiskey Magazine. It is a very nice publication. I can’t watit to try that with a cigar.

Marcus: I appreciate the comments. Don’t worry about your first comment. They were appreciated. I thought I would throw in a little tidbit since I deal with computers all the time. It was just some friendly advice between cigars. I know I need to break out the big boys. I have a Opus X that has been in the humidor for 2 years and a Zino that has been in there for over 4 years. I did enjoy the Oliva Master Blend. Did you see my review on the Factory Press by La Flor?

Dave: Thanks for the comments. I will see what I can do about showing other common smoking issues.

All: Thanks for the continued comments. I really appreciate them and they help me to fine tune my reviews.

  8. Justin,

Nice review… the editing was way better. I think since you’re in Vegas you should review every cigar they sell in Casa Fuente! just kidding man… keep up the good work.

  9. Jabba, I am thinking about going there and doing a review. Jerry did a review on the Casa Fuente stick already, but I could review a Fuente or something. Reviewing every stick would take a long time, but I would be up for the challenge, but I doubt my credit card would be.

    Thanks for watching.

  10. Justin, I think you should really think about collecting your thoughts and then presenting the dialog for longer periods of time. In your videos, you puff pretty fast and only get in a few words before you puff again.

  11. I have been smoking the Henry Clay Breva for many years. The flavor, to me, is the smell of fresh turned forest soil, a very pleasant natural earthy flavor. The Breva, a 5.50 x 42, is a more comfortable size and balance, and pressed to a slightly irregular square shape which makes it easier to hold and stays put on top of a glass of Tennessee Whiskey in this cigarette ashtray dominated world.
