Fuente Fuente – Opus X

Thursday was my birthday, but due to being very busy with both work and night classes I couldn’t find the time to enjoy a cigar. On Friday I decided to smoke one of the very few Fuente Fuente Opus X cigars I had in the humidor.

My first impression of this cigar was that it may not live up to all the hype that it’s gotten so far. Being a special day, I decided to ignore the reviews I’ve read and smoke one for myself.

The first thing that jumps out at you is the appearance of this stick. It is a medium brown color that is hidden away by a very attractive band. In addition to the band the cigar comes wrapped in a cedar sleeve capped off by a bright red piece of cloth.

I pulled the cedar sleeve off to inspect the cigar. I found it to be constructed very well. It was firm with a slight oily sheen. The aroma of the cigar was light and pleasant. I used my plug cutter on the end and the result was a clean easy cut.

The pre-light draw was excellent, so I began to light the cigar. I had the foot of the cigar lit very quickly and began the smoking experience. The smoke that was produced was thick and plentiful. The initial flavor was floral with a medium body and soft finish.

As I smoked into this cigar the burn was nice and slow as well as even, producing a firm light colored ash. The resting smoke was light and produced a light attractive scent that filled the room.

As I approached the half way point of this cigar I was having some burn issues. I had a very hard time keeping the cigar lit. This required several touch ups that didn’t seem to hurt the flavor, just cause an annoyance that I would have rather avoided.

The flavor base was consistent all the way to the nub. There were a few times when the subtle flavors took a slight turn and tickled the pallet with a little spice and pepper. The finish was soft on the pallet and creamy.

All in all I really enjoyed this cigar. I was getting a little annoyed by the relights but aside from that the cigar performed excellently. This isn’t a cigar that I would consider smoking semi regularly, but it was an excellent choice to celebrate my birthday.

  1. Happy Birthday Walt! (a bit late, of course.) I haven’t tried the Opus X yet, but your review seems in line with most of the others I’ve read — it’s a great cigar, but perhaps not as great as all the hype would suggest. I have a couple stewing in the humidor, and your review just makes me more anxious to try one. Many happy returns!

  2. Walt is just the greatest! Here I was, had your birthday written down and I still forgot. Man I’m a pretty lame friend.

Great review though! I’ve only had one in my life and wasn’t that impressed but does that stop me from hurrying down to my B&M when they get them in stock on holidays? Of course not…

  3. Jerry,

Without you making one of those B&M runs i wouldnt have had the chance to smoke one of these. Thanks again 🙂

  4. Tried a couple of those Opus X cigars. Experienced the same problem: keeping them lit. Tastewise: overrated cigar imho, prefer a Cuban anytime, but hey, who am I.
